The Setting
It was not Humanity that destroyed the world…
The War in Heaven has taken Earth as a casualty. Forces of immeasurable power have caused nuclear explosions that have devastated and ravaged the planet, wiping out more than 90% of all life. Governments no longer exist. Survivors of the Apocalypse have been mutated by the radiation. Bands of cannibals prey on the weak. Oceans are drying up and clean water is scarce. Mothers sell their infants as a source of food.
Amidst this terror celestial beings either rage against one another (entangled in a never ending war), or set aside differences to work toward the mutual goal of restoring the planet. Indeed, there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth. Until then this decaying world is their only home.
The Landscape
A hundred years after the Apocalypse the Earth is struggling. Life goes on, but ecological progress is slow. The pale glow of irradiated dust blows across fields of desert, stretching from one coast to another. Where clean oceans abundant with aquatic life met those coasts are now massive dried salt beds, hot white and glaring.
Emerald forests that were thick with lush vegetation, remain as testimony to the horrors they experienced. Having been stripped of their lives they stand naked and brittle. Mountains tower as they did, some higher than before, but the radiation they absorbed has made them inhospitable, and lakes where water evaporated receive acid rain.
The mega-cities that once covered the planet like an incredulous armor have rusted and been reclaimed by nature. What vegetation grows there is abundant but dangerous. For decades it has fed on radiation and been watered by poison. Hollowed out structures that were once skyscrapers only resemble their former selves and are now the homes of flesh-eating insects and Mutates.
Humanity managed to survive. Those who did not die within the first year from radiation poisoning were either saved by Angels or tormented by Demons. And those small groups of survivors, some wanting death, were kept alive by the Celestials to continue procreating.
